I have some credit card debt from my younger, credit card happy days.....I also have $45,000 in student loans that I%26#039;ve recently began paying. Once its paid (credit cards), will I ever be able to have good credit meaning, has this debt hurt me forever even when I pay it off?? Also, should I consolidate this debt into one payment or handle them individually? .Thank you in advace :)

If you have never been late on your CC payments, you have no problem. The fact that you ran up debt and paid it off will look good, not bad.

If you have lates on the CC, they fall off your report in 7 years.

The 45K is a hell of a lot more of a concern than 5K on credit cards. The $5000 is nothing for someone with a good job and no other debt, unless you went in arrears and collections on it. If that is the case, it will always show up.

You don%26#039;t have to pay the credit card debt in full to improve your credit rating -- significant timely payments will do the trick, especially if you can get the balance down. But if you can pay the credit card bill in full, it is well to do so, as the interest charges will eat your lunch -- and your dinner, too. The student loans are another matter; just pay these off by their terms: the interest rate is not high.

As long as you are making your monthly payments you should be in good standing. Sure your credit score may not be as high as you wish (if you are max%26#039;d on your cards) but as long as you make at least the min payment (more is preferred) as your balance goes down your score will go up. So the more you pay on your cc bills your available credit will raise and the better your fico score will become. (this also goes for the student loans too)

If you are past due in the bills that means you are already in the collections which show late payments or past due. it is wise for you to think about how far in debt you are and if you can continue to pay these bills. If you are only able to pay minium payment it is going to take you foreve. I would not say going bankruptcy is the soloution but I had to do it and it worked very well for me. They say it can hurt you for 10 yrs now, But the day I went to court I had a pre approved credit card at my house. You no alot of companies then look at you as being debt free. I bought me a new car within 2 yrs and doing just fine. Some people will still notice it but many others do not. I am glad that i did what i did cause it made me with a fresh start and now I have a new beggginning. It also made me much smarter and more responible about getting my self in a mess like that. If you can once you get this taken care of avoid as much plastic as you can that will always do you in. good luck and hope you make right choice. But that was my choice and it worked for me.
